Paper scrap: how to get a fair price for newspapers, books and cardboard

Newspapers pile up quickly, and so do old copies and delivery boxes. Paper is easy to recycle, but how you store it makes a real difference to what you get for it.

Keep it dry

Wet or mouldy paper is hard to recycle and is usually not accepted. Store paper indoors, off the floor and away from the bathroom or kitchen.

Sort it by type

Newspaper, books and copies, and cardboard each have their own rate. Keeping them in separate bundles makes weighing faster and makes sure each type is paid at the right price.

Flatten your boxes

Flattened cardboard takes less space at home and is quicker to weigh and carry.

Remove what is not paper

Where it is easy, pull off plastic covers, tape and metal binding. Clean paper is worth more to the recycler.

Sell it in one go

Waiting until you have a good amount saves you time. Check the latest paper rates on our Scrap Rates page, then book a pickup when you are ready.
